China Unicom Guangdong Branch (hereinafter referred to as "Guangdong Unicom") and Huawei 5G "Digital Fishing Boat" project won the GSMA "5G Productivity Challenge Award" in 2023. This shows that the efforts of both parties to jointly create new 5G innovative products, build 5G operation ecosystem and promote industry digitalization through the "5G Fast City" have been recognized by the industry, and also provide referential experience for the in-depth development of 5G applications in global cities.

GSMA judges David Pringle, senior analyst at Pringle Media, said: "On the 450-kilometer coastline of Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, 5G is completely changing the lives of fishermen, enabling them to timely understand the weather conditions, sell fishing goods and keep in touch with their families when fishing at sea. The digital fishing boat system of Guangdong Unicom has provided services for more than 4000 fishing boats, and can also help the local fishery authorities to mitigate the disaster impact of typhoons and combat illegal fishing operations."

Guangdong Unicom and Huawei rely on China Unicom's 5G private network PLUS product system to jointly develop the 5G digital fishing boat system, which uses 5G, cloud computing, Internet of Things, Beidou positioning and other technologies to achieve all-weather dynamic monitoring of fishing boat operations at sea. Through the 5G MetaAAU super-large antenna array, the system gives full play to the advantages of 3.5G band and large bandwidth, and can still maintain the access capacity of 60Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream in the 61km sea. On the "digital fishing boat", fishermen can not only watch the news, but also timely understand the weather warning and other information, and make high-definition video calls with their families. In case of an emergency on the fishing boat, fishermen can call for help through the App and get assistance in time. Fishermen can also use apps to link to major e-commerce platforms and sell seafood products to all parts of the country through e-commerce channels.

Guangdong Unicom plans to further promote the digital fishing boat system and provide relevant services for 40000 to 50000 fishing boats in Guangdong Province. At the same time, Guangdong Unicom and Huawei also plan to carry out innovative cooperation with industrial partners in the fields of offshore wind power, offshore ranching, island tourism and other fields through the "5G Fast City".

Guangdong Unicom and Huawei have successively lit up the "5G fast city" in Foshan, the "manufacturing city", Yangjiang, the "ocean city" and Guangzhou, the "gigabit city", and deeply released the 5G value. Facing the future, Guangdong Unicom and Huawei will continue to make efforts in the exploration of 5.5G new application scenarios and the promotion of rural revitalization, so as to warm up the smart life, enable thousands of industries, and make greater contributions to the development of economy, society and people's livelihood.
