Saudi Arabia Telecom and Huawei have signed a memorandum of cooperation on building an all-optical strategic partnership towards the F5.5G era, which includes consensus and product and solution cooperation under the F5G and F5.5G industry standards. The purpose of this memorandum of cooperation is to help STC build an all-optical infrastructure network that meets the requirements of ultra-large bandwidth, ultra-high speed, quality experience, and autonomous driving, while accelerating the implementation of the digital transformation strategy while achieving a commercial prosperity in fixed networks.

In September 2022, ETSI released a Fixed 5th Generation Advanced and Beyond white paper that defines the core capabilities of F5.5G. The F5.5G era has brought four major changes:

User experience reaches 10Gbps: F5.5G introduces next-generation technologies such as FTTR, Wi-Fi 7, 50G PON, and 800G to achieve 10Gbps ubiquity;

Business boundary beyond connection: Optical fiber sensing technology is applied to scenarios such as fire and earthquake warning, gas detection, and water quality detection;

Network security: upgrade from telecom level to industrial level, and accelerate industrial digital upgrading;

Network is more environmentally friendly: Optical fiber transmission technology can reduce energy consumption by 90% compared to EXC, and all-optical access technology can reduce energy consumption by 80% compared to copper.

Huawei and STC will strengthen cooperation in areas such as 50G PON, FTTR, OXC, metropolitan pooling wavelength division, wavelength division 400G/800G, and ultra high-speed 1.2T in the future, including technical research, technical testing, commercial deployment, and publicity, and form a joint team to innovate in the F5.5G field. Huawei stated that it would fully support the construction of STC fixed network. At the same time, stc expressed its willingness to join standards or industry organizations such as ETSI/WBBA to enhance stc's industry influence while providing value cases, technologies, and architectures for the F5.5G standard.

"With the signing of the F5.5G Memorandum, STC will better promote end-to-end innovation and commercialization of fixed network, and maintain its continued leadership in the fixed network industry," said Hisham A. Alabdaly, General Manager of STC's Infrastructure Design Department

Jin Yuzhi, President of Huawei Optical Product Line, said, "Huawei will work with STC to continue to make technological breakthroughs and product innovations on the F5.5G development path, help STC network continue to evolve forward, continuously improve end-user experience and network operational efficiency, create greater business value, and contribute to the realization of Saudi Arabia's 2030 vision."
