This white paper elaborates on the current situation and challenges of coexistence of multi generation voice networks, proposes that a fusion network supporting multi generation voice technology is the solution to smooth voice evolution, and points out that value services based on IMS data channels are a new development direction for voice.

Voice service remains one of the most important services for operators

GlobalData surveyed the challenges and strategies faced by 50 mobile operators worldwide in their voice services. Andy Hicks, the main author of the white paper and chief analyst of GlobalData, stated that in the current era of increasingly active internet audio and video communication, the voice business of operators is still trusted by global mobile consumers due to its unique advantages of high reliability and stability. The research results of the white paper show that up to 82% of surveyed operators believe that voice and SMS services are equally or almost equally important as data services in 5G networks. The survey shows that voice traffic tends to be stable in most operators and even increases in a small number of operators due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Integrated voice solutions are the best choice for multi generational networks

With the increase of cellular network fragmentation, operators need to provide voice services on multiple networks from 2G to 5G. This situation has brought about the problems of increased operator spending, VoLTE roaming and smooth network evolution. According to a white paper survey, 32% of operators stated that they will not continue investing after the end of the 2G/3G network's lifecycle, compared to only 17% in 2020. This change indicates that operators need to seek other ways to maintain 2G/3G network services. Some operators are considering using integrated voice solutions to enhance network capabilities and reduce operating costs. In addition, integrated voice solutions can greatly simplify VoLTE roaming issues, accelerate VoLTE development, maximize spectrum value, and promote the large-scale commercial use of 5G.

The voice industry welcomes business innovation opportunities

In the process of 5G development, in addition to traditional voice services, the industry needs more innovative value services to help operators increase revenue. The white paper points out that 3GPP R16 introduces IMS Data Channel, which enables users to use voice and data services in the same session by introducing data streams synchronized with the voice channel, achieving interactive calls, namely 5G new call services. This technology has opened up a new direction for the development of voice services. Operators can use IMS data channels to enable more new services, further improve user experience, and promote innovation in voice services in 5G.
